Ottawa to Montreal to Quebec City

(2 nights) Travel to Montreal where you will have time for lunch prior to departing on a GUIDED TOUR of this historic city. Then continue to Quebec City, the oldest French settlement in North America. This evening features DINNER at an authentic SUGAR SHACK – a perfect ending to an interesting day.

Quebec City

In the morning a STEP-ON-GUIDE will introduce us to this beautiful very historic city. Marvel at the spectacular beauty enhanced by the presence of the mighty St. Lawrence River. Quebec City portrays over 400 years of history through its architecture and narrow winding streets. In the afternoon drive along Canada’s oldest road through historical villages on the north bank of the St. Lawrence River. The day includes stops at an OLD-FASHIONED BAKE OVEN and cafeteria renowned for its maple butter and the famous shrine of STE-ANNE-DE-BEAUPRE. Return to Quebec City where you may wish to experience its charm by strolling through the shops and quaint cafes of the only walled city north of Mexico.

Quebec City to Fredericton

This morning visit ST-JEAN-PORT-JOLI to see the works of the famous wood-carvers. Continue into the first of the Atlantic Provinces, New Brunswick. HARTLAND COVERED BRIDGE NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE (longest in the world) is only an introduction to what lies ahead in the unique world of Atlantic Canada. Overnight in Fredericton.

Fredericton to Charlottetown

(2 nights) Your morning drive through the rolling hills and dairy region of New Brunswick brings you to MAGNETIC HILL in Moncton where vehicles coast uphill, or seem to! Visit the fishing village of SHEDIAC for a photo opportunity with the WORLD’S LARGEST LOBSTER. Cross the Northumberland Strait via CONFEDERATION BRIDGE arriving on Prince Edward Island for a two-night stay. This fixed crossing replaced the ferries which had been the main mode of transportation for almost a century. Tonight experience a true “island” tradition as our guests at a HOSTED LOBSTER DINNER (meal option available).

Charlottetown

Travel to Wood Islands to board the FERRY to Caribou on the Nova Scotia mainland. Drive across the Canso Causeway onto Cape Breton Island. Visit Singer/Songwriter RITA MACNEIL’S TEA ROOM at Big Pond prior to a short DRIVING TOUR OF SYDNEY on the way to your hotel for overnight.

Sydney via Ferry to Corner Brook

Board the MARINE ATLANTIC FERRY at North Sydney for a six-hour crossing to Newfoundland. Dock at Port aux Basques and continue to Corner Brook for overnight.

Corner Brook to Clarenville

Follow the Trans-Canada Highway through Newfoundland’s central region, rich in wildlife, cradle of the forest industry and once home of the Beothuk Indians. Continue through Grand Falls to Gander. Travel through TERRA NOVA NATIONAL PARK, the most easterly of Canada’s National Parks. This evening you are treated to a SCREECHIN CEREMONY, the traditional “Newfoundland Welcome”.

Clarenville to Bonavista to St. John’s

(3 nights) This morning we visit the RYAN PREMISES NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE showing the history of the people involved in the fishing industry. Visit the lighthouse at CAPE BONAVISTA before departing for St. John’s, the provincial capital, for a three-night stay.

St. John’s

This morning a GUIDED CITY TOUR will introduce you to one of the oldest European settlements in North America. Drive the Avalon Peninsula to CAPE SPEAR, home of the oldest lighthouse in the province and the most easterly point on the continent. From here you are closer to the British Isles than from anywhere else in North America. The evening is free to enjoy this beautiful city on your own.

A free day to explore the oldest city in North America on your own. Experience one of the many downtown pubs, enjoy a shopping spree or visit some of the small shops offering unique items as you enjoy the many flavours of Newfoundland.

This morning follow the rocky coastline of Conception Bay through the quaint villages of Foxtrop, Holyrood, Harbour Grace and Carbonear on your way to Heart’s Content for a visit to the CABLE STATION PROVINCIAL HISTORIC SITE. Continue to Grand Falls for overnight.

Grand Falls to Gros Morne to Port Aux Basques

Today travel west to GROS MORNE NATIONAL PARK, designated a World Heritage Site. Discover some of the world’s most spectacular scenery. Steep cliffs, deep lakes and quaint fishing villages are a photographer’s dream. Tour the park’s DISCOVERY CENTRE overlooking spectacular Bonne Bay prior to travelling to Port aux Basques for overnight.

Port Aux Basques via Ferry to Baddeck

(2 nights) Re-board your FERRY for the return trip to Cape Breton Island. Continue to the enjoyable resort town of Baddeck for a two-night stay.

(2 nights) Step back in time to the year 1744 and experience the French FORTRESS OF LOUISBOURG. This National Historic Site is one of the largest reconstructions in North America. Your journey continues to Halifax, Nova Scotia’s capital to the centrally-located Hampton Inn for two nights.

This morning a GUIDED TOUR including the historic CITADEL introduces you to Atlantic Canada’s largest city. You will be impressed by the natural beauty of this harbour-front setting. Enjoy an interesting visit to PIER 21 – Canada’s Immigration Museum, where you have a chance to research the arrival of your ancestors to this beautiful country. Pier 21 was the entry point for 1.5 million immigrants, war brides, displaced people, evacuee children and Canadian military personnel from 1928-1971. The call of the ocean and the beauty of the sea will lure you to PEGGY’S COVE for a late afternoon visit and optional meal. With its lighthouse sitting on a massive granite ledge, this cove is a mecca for artists and photographers. Return to Halifax for overnight.

Halifax to Saint John

This morning enjoy a tour of the ANNE MURRAY CENTRE in Springhill, Nova Scotia, home-town of Canada’s famous “snowbird”. Re-enter New Brunswick and stop at HOPEWELL CAPE, the location of the highest tides in the world. View the Flower Pot Rocks carved by the Fundy tides. These peculiar formations are forested islands at high tide and resemble flower pots at low tide. Travel through FUNDY NATIONAL PARK to arrive in Canada’s Loyalist City, Saint John. View the REVERSING FALLS where the Bay of Fundy tides force the Saint John River to reverse direction. Arrive at your hotel for overnight.

Saint John to Gorham

Cross into the United States to be treated to the unbelievable splendour of fall in the New England states. Nowhere in the world can the lovely reds, greens and golds of the eastern fall colours be matched. Our route takes us across Maine and into New Hampshire for overnight in the heart of the WHITE MOUNTAIN NATIONAL FOREST area.

Your journey comes to an end as you spend your morning touring the Niagara Falls area. Enjoy a boat ride to the base of the falls with HORNBLOWER CRUISES. Return to Toronto with an interesting drive through the quaint village of NIAGARA ON THE LAKE and the Niagara fruit belt. Arrival time at Toronto airport is planned for 4:00 p.m. to allow for early evening flights.
