Grande Prairie to Peace River to Grande Prairie

Monday.  Your first day in Peace Country takes us to Peace River itself.  On the way, stop in Falher, the Honey Capital of Canada, to see the WORLD’S LARGEST BEE.   In Peace River, enjoy an informative day learning about the history of the area and looking in-depth at agriculture in this northern-most crop growing region on a GUIDED DRIVING TOUR.  As you return to Grande Prairie cross the DUNVEGAN BRIDGE, the only vehicle suspension bridge in Alberta.

3

Grande Prairie

Tuesday.  Start your day exploring with a brief orientation of Grande Prairie. Then visit MUSKOSEEPI PARK and enjoy the GRANDE PRAIRIE MUSEUM and HERITAGE VILLAGE.  The afternoon will bring you to the tiny hamlet of Wembley to visit the PHILIP J. CURRIE DINOSAUR MUSEUM, Alberta’s newest museum dedicated to the discovery and study of Canada’s paleo-heritage.

Grande Prairie to Dawson Creek to Grande Prairie

Wednesday.  Venture into British Columbia’s section of Peace Country.  You will stop briefly in Valhalla Centre to learn about the Scandinavian settlers in the area at the MELSNESS MERCANTILE, today a Café that includes a Heritage Room and is surrounded by the VALHALLA TROLL PARK.  Continue on to Dawson Creek, MILE 0 of the Alaska Highway.  Learn about the building of this highway, a feat completed in less than a year between March and October 1942, while at the DAWSON CREEK STATION MUSEUM.  Have some free time to explore the downtown area before heading back to Alberta.  Enjoy a late lunch at the BEAVERLODGE FARMERS’ MARKET.  Return to the hotel early for a restful evening, lounging by the pool or perhaps visiting with family or friends.

5

Grande Prairie to Hinton

Thursday.  This morning you leave the Peace Country behind and take the scenic drive down Highway 40 through the Smoky River valley.  A morning break with cookies and juice at SOUTHVIEW PROVINCIAL RECREATION AREA is your first stop at a scenic overlook.  Soon you will arrive in Grande Cache, founded in 1966 to support the coal mines in the area.  You will learn a bit of the history of the area at the GRANDE CACHE TOURISM and INTERPRETIVE CENTRE, and then have free time for lunch. Arrive in Hinton early enough to take in a walk on the Beaver Boardwalk, the world’s longest freshwater boardwalk, or perhaps visit the Hinton Museum or just rest at your hotel and enjoy the pool and other amenities.  Enjoy a HOSTED FAREWELL DINNER tonight with your new-found friends.
