St. John’s

A morning GUIDED CITY TOUR introduces you to one of the oldest settlements in North America.  Stops include the Cabot Tower and Signal Hill to view the harbour’s “Narrows”. Admire the architecture of old St. John’s including the famous ‘Jelly Bean Houses’ as well as the bustling village of Quidi Vidi. Visit Cape Spear National Historic Park, the most easterly point on the continent. From here you are closer to the British Isles than from anywhere else in North America. Enjoy some free time in the downtown area before travelling north to the ADMIRAL’S COAST.  The uniquely named fishing villages nestled into the rugged cliffs are picture perfect.  Dinner tonight is on George Street, a street of pubs and bars. Enjoy the local pub fare along with some Newfoundland music and entertainment. Meals Include:  Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

St. John’s

This morning travel to the southern shore of the AVALON PENINSULA along the winding coastline of the beautiful IRISH LOOP, dotted with small ‘outport’ communities for which Newfoundland is so famous. Visit the COLONY OF AVALON ARCHAEOLOGY SITE where the remains of an early 17th century settlement are well preserved.  After lunch in FERRYLAND travel up the Irish Loop to the community of BAY BULLS for a BOAT TOUR (weather permitting). You don’t want to miss the chance to see Atlantic Puffins, Murres and other seabirds, as well as Humpback, Minke and Fin whales. Tonight enjoy DINNER in Bay Bulls.  Meals Include:  Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

St. John’s

Travel “around the Bay” following the picturesque coastline of CONCEPTION BAY, home of pirates centuries ago. Stop for picture taking along the way and visit some of the more interesting villages such as HOLYROOD and BRIGUS, known as historic sailing ports of Conception Bay and home of the famous late Captain Bob Bartlett, who took Robert Perry to the North Pole.  Meals Include:  Breakfast, Lunch.

St. John’s to Marystown

Cross the Isthmus of Avalon this morning to explore the “BURIN BOOT”. The picturesque town of Swift Current offers a nice mid-morning break on the way to Marystown, hub of this peninsula and your home for the night. An afternoon visit to Burin and SAINT LAWRENCE portrays details of the heroic efforts of the local community to save the seamen aboard the doomed vessels, The Pollux and Truxtun.  Meals Include:  Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Marystown to St. Pierre, France

(2 nights) Before arriving in Fortune, travel to GRAND BANK, made famous by its namesake schooners and prolific fishing heritage.  After lunch, take the FERRY to the French Island of St. Pierre. With a population of 6,500, the infrastructure is modern and urban. The residents are a combination of rotating French employees and those who have lived on the island for many generations.  Their traditions are completely European with an interesting mix of French and Basques culture and history.  Upon arrival enjoy a TOUR OF THE ISLAND.  Late afternoon offers free time.   Tonight enjoy true authentic FRENCH CUISINE at one of St. Pierre’s finest restaurants.  Meals Include:  Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

St. Pierre, France

Options are provided for today. Some may choose to take a half-day tour to the tiny island of Isle aux Marins (Sailor’s Island), situated in the mouth of the St. Pierre harbour. At one time a fishing village of over 600 souls made it larger than St Pierre, today is essentially depopulated except for those with summer homes and cabins. Others may choose a free morning in St. Pierre to visit the sites and museums or to just ‘twack’ around in the shops that feature many imports from France and other parts of Europe.  Meals Include:  Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

St. Pierre to St. John’s

(2 nights) Catch the morning FERRY back to Fortune, Newfoundland before returning to St. John’s in time for dinner and/or exploring the downtown area on your own.  Meals Include: Breakfast, Lunch.
